Right wing conservatives have scheduled a protest against Facebook on Sunday, August 25, by going dark. They will not sign-on to Facebook for a 24 hour period beginning at 12 am Sunday morning and ending at 12 am Monday morning.
The organizers of the "blackout" have set up an event page on Facebook so people can sign up and send out invitations to other like-minded people to join the "blackout". At the time of this writing, 27,735 people have agreed to go dark for the 24 hour period. Another 223,970 people on Facebook have been sent invitations but have not responded.
On the event page it says, “We are organizing a nationwide "blackout" of Facebook to protest their arbitrary and capricious policies targeting conservatives with censoring and suspensions. We are asking for all conservatives to suspend (deactivate) their accounts for at least 24 hours on August 25th. If you are a business or promoting a page and have a FB advertising account, we are asking that you also suspend that for 24 hours."
Facebook has a set of standards called “Facebook Community Standards” which cover such things as; “Hate Speech, Bullying and Harassment, Graphic Content, Nudity and Pornography, Intellectual Property, Phishing and Spam, Violence or Threats, Self-Harm, Identity and Privacy, and Security." You can read the details of each of these by clicking here.
In an open letter to Facebook set up on a website to promote this event, it says, “Conservative, Libertarian, Republican, Christian and similar groups seem to be held to a different standard than other users on Facebook. We have been unjustly punished for participating in the Facebook community.”
That is not true, they are expected to follow the same set of standards that over 1 billion Facebook users follow, but some do not. So, Facebook may suspend their account or shut it down completely depending on how egregious their offense may be. And Facebook suspends plenty of other groups and individuals who are not right wingers when they too break the same set of standards that all users on Facebook have agreed to follow.
And this is not the first time right wingers have cried foul with Facebook, they have called for blackouts in the past, and claiming similar reasons for being shut down or suspended.
The hate riddled comments right wingers post all over Facebook and on the internet are vile. And if you have never seen how vile some of them can be, just go to one of their Facebook pages and read the comments.
The event organizers for Sunday’s “blackout” say that they are being held to a different set of standards, when in reality, they themselves ignore the standards set by Facebook.

The organizers of this event posted the following announcement earlier saying that the event page would be removed after August 25. As of this update the event site is no longer accessible and they are asking that those who participated to join them on their new Facebook page, "The Liberty Tree", which is currently open and not participating in their own blackout.
"This page will not be accessible after the 25th. We would like to carry this energy and momentum forward as a permanent movement to address, not only the Facebook issue, but other pressing issues of importance to us as conservatives. In that vein, we have started a Facebook group where we can all meet after this event to organize and 'strategize' our future plans. The group is called "The Liberty Tree" because the liberty tree was a tree in Boston which is considered the birthplace of the American Revolution and where the patriots gathered. https://www.facebook.com/groups/228863673929366/ "
