Losing weight and exercising might be the most popular resolutions taken up at the start of every new year, but they are not the only choices you have when thinking about making this year even better than the last. Hill Country Weavers is encouraging Austinites to make crafting part of their resolutions for 2014, whether you're a novice with the needles or looking to advance your skills.

For January and February only, the store is offering free quick-start knitting and crochet classes at the following times:


  • January 9, 6:30-8:30pm
  • January 11, 1-3pm
  • January 13, 1-3pm
  • January 23, 6:30-8:30pm
  • January 25, 1-3pm
  • January 26, 1-3pm
  • January 27, 1-3pm


  • January 11, 3:30-5:30pm
  • January 19, 3-5pm
  • January 21, 1-3pm
  • January 25, 3:30-5:30pm
  • January 28, 6:30-8:30pm

Materials are not included in these free sessions, which are limited to one per person. Call the store at 512-707-7396 to reserve a spot for yourself or a craft-curious friend or family member.

Current knitters can resolve to add skills to their "knitting toolbox" with the store's other New Year's program. Simply pick up a Knitting Toolbox Stamp Card and choose up to twelve of the listed skills to tackle this year:

  • Socks
  • Double Knitting
  • Triangle Scarf or Shawl
  • Cables
  • A Sweater
  • A Hat
  • Try a new Fiberart - Spinning

  • Making a buttonhole
  • I-cord
  • Kitchner Stitch

Bring in completed projects to get your card stamped (only one skill may be stamped per project), and to get a ticket to enter an end-of-the-year drawing for prizes. You'll also get a 10% discount on the yarn for your next skilled project if you buy it in that same visit.

The store will be holding classes to help you learn these techniques and more throughout the year, so stay tuned and start planning your year of crafting.
