The wind was blowing, it was brisk and cool, partly cloudy, and a typical February Wasilla day at the Wasilla Lake Park. Looking east, one could see the Chugach mountains and Matanuska Pass, the source of the wind. Flags waved, and people stood patiently, well dressed with respect to the weather, waiting for the event to begin.
Tim and Terri Cornelius organized the event. There was a refreshments tent with free cookies, hot coffee, hot tea, and hot dogs and chili. The tent was a pretty popular place to be after the first hour of standing in the wind.
Almost 200 people showed up to hear the speakers, and to enjoy the breezy weather and the gorgeous view of the Chugach Mountains in the background of Wasilla Lake. It was about 23̊F with a 20 mph east wind off the lake.
The proceedings began with a moment of silence in respect to the Founding Fathers and the Framers of the Constitution followed by a pledge of allegiance to the Flag. Typical Tea Party fare.
It was commented that while today’s weather may have been a little brisk, it was nothing like the experience of the Continental soldiers under General George Washington at Valley Forge.
February 23, 2013 marked a day of peaceful protest across the United States to the President’s and Senator Feinstein’s attempts at banning firearms and magazines and to require potentially invasive and unwarranted background checks that would accomplish nothing other than to give the federal government a list of firearms owners and the types of firearms owned. The proposed laws would do nothing to curb gun violence in this country, something admitted by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in a report evaluating the proposed gun control legislation and executive orders. Peaceful protests were held in Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks and Wasilla in Alaska.
The January 4, 2013 NIJ “Summary of Select Firearms Violence Prevention Strategies” concludes that “Assault weapons” are not are not a major contributor to gun crime . . . a complete elimination of assault weapons would not have a large impact on gun homicides.” Therefore, what is the purpose in banning the AR15 type rifle? Answer: There is not any purpose, other than to degrade the ability of the militia to react to an overreach by the federal government.
Mayor Verne Rupright, Wasilla, gave an interpretation on the Equal Footing Doctrine in the Constitution. Rupright is an attorney and a RVN veteran. He is on his second term as Wasilla’s Mayor. Several other speakers gave additional historical facts about the Constitution and recent SCOTUS cases having an affect upon firearms ownership and use in the U.S. The assembly listened peacefully and respectfully.
There were no protestors in favor of gun control present.
