
Talk about being sore losers.
After handily losing two elections and finding American polls more against them than ever, the neoconservative heart of the GOP is steadily moving from baseless insults against President Barack Obama to calls for violent action.
Republican Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, the same woman who considers her job at Congress as being "behind enemy lines," wants Americans to rise up and overthrow our democratically elected leader.
Want to know what's funny? This is the same person -- just like her fellow extremist cultists -- who marched in step with every liberty-stealing move of the Bush Administration.
This is the same person -- and crowd -- who decried any criticism of Bush as being traitorous. Who thought it was fine to lose the protections of due process, the rule of law, habeaus corpus. Who thought it was okay to allow illegal and unconstitutional surveillance programs. Who thought it was okay to scream for endless wars based on emotion rather than rationality.
This is the same person who, as I wrote in October, believes not in free and lively debate but in painting a broad section of Americans as "fake" or "real" according to their political views. It is not alarmist to point out that dehumanizing your political enemies is the first step of fascism, and the fanatical ideology that was empowered during the Bush years launched merciless media campaigns in order to do just that.
And it wasn't just liberals, libertarians, freethinkers or independents that found themselves smeared. It was fellow Republicans, the ones branded with the "moderate" label. It was fellow Republicans, which I have been tirelessly documenting in my columns, the ones who dare to be classic conservatives and not the perversion of radical right-wing stormtroopers.
Now that Bachmann and her ilk are out of power, this same group is abandoning their pretensions. They want blood.

Make no mistake: the neoconservative cult is not interested in what's proper for America. They are only interested in political wins. They were behind the bailout when Republicans like McCain and Bush were behind it, and they blissfully ignored the bipartisanship nature of that travesty. I have never before seen a group motivated by such enduring irrationality, raw hate, and fear before.
President Obama has done things I like and dislike. I agree and disagree as the issue merits, and through it all perceive someone who is a calm, well-mannered statesman with ideas rooted in logic and not emotion. For eight years, America endured the leadership of George W. Bush and by the end of that cruise we found that our vessel had been tarnished morally, economically, militarily, scientifically, and culturally. I'm willing to give our new leader the time to try and fix a mess that he didn't make.
No single party has the monopoly on vitriolic hatred. Yet the comparison between the Bush-haters and Obama-haters is anything but equal. Many leading voices with rational, documented arguments were raised against Bush. By contrast, the cries against Obama have chimed uncannily well with a KKK rally: full of fear-mongering and unjustified rage. Bush was attacked for what he had done; Obama was attacked by what he was believed to be.
It isn't treason to criticize a President. But it is treason to actively call for revolution, foment violence, and encourage a civil war based on nothing more than catering to the lowest kind of mob mentality. Bachmann should lose her job, and appear before a judge. Someone should remind her that in America, we have something called elections. If she doesn't like the outcome of a vote, perhaps she should start thinking about the next election before she contemplates armed revolution.
America judged Bush after 8 years of his leadership. I think Obama is permitted more than 8 weeks to show us what his leadership is like.

Mr. Trent, I'm afraid I'm going to have to call you and Mr. Olbermann to task for this. I just listened to this video twice through to make sure, and found that Ms. Bachmann did *not* call for a "violent" revolution; she called for an "orderly" revolution. "Violent" was Olbermann's added word. In addition, the political analyst J. Alter said "armed" rebellion..also incorrect. He was combining quotes: "Armed and dangerous on the energy tax"/"Orderly rebellion".
Now I personally think Ms. Bachmann is way out there, BUT: this is a perfect example of a rumor getting started. Olbermann, Alter, and now *you* with this article title are guilty of twisting words and founding a rumor.
A lot of Americans depend on news channels and newspapers to stay caught up wityh current events. It is the responsibility of those who purport to be representatives of news sources to get *accurate* quotes.Bachmann being a nutjob doesn't justify you or MSNBC misquoting her words.

Maybe you should listen to the video a third time. She might be trying to cover herself by saying a revolution should be "orderly," but she's talking about revolution, "rising up," and last week's comments about being "armed and dangerous." In a Republic, we have elections to change regimes.
Hey now, I just posted my comments and now it is not there. What is going on? I did not use any vulgar language nor did I call anyone names. All I stated was that I disagree with this blog. Congresswoman Bachmann is not promoting a 'violent' revolution..she is stating that those who disagree with the policies of the current administration must voice their opinion. We, the middle class, hardworking, responsible mothers and fathers (who have never rallied before)must fight the socialistic grab for power by the democrats and stop this idiotic spending. Our government will not bring us out of this recession by spending trillions of dollars that we have to borrow from other nations. If anything it will prolong this recession ( or is it a depression) and decrease our individual liberties. The government should not be running our businesses, our great free market system will lose its efficiencies, effectiveness and innovativeness with the government in control of our businesses.
The teaparties that are happening throughout the nation on a daily basis are exactly what needs to be done and what the Congresswoman means. We conservatives (dems, rep,libertarians & independents) are protesting peacefully and civilly. They are grassroots organized and legal. April 15th...there will be over 300 cities sponsoring tax day teaparties. Wow! Where do I start with this one?
First, I don't care what color, gender, or orientation a person is, they must prove that they meet the constitutional qualifications for the office of President of The United States before running for it, which President Obama still has not done. The courts are dragging their heels on upholding the Constitution. A certificate of live birth is not the same as a birth certificate, and even the authenticity of that has been challenged. So what should the citizens do if the government, including the courts, ceases to abide by the Constitution?
Second, if they support policies and appoint staff such as President Obama has, they are dangerous socialists/globalists. The first, second, and tenth amendments are in particular jeopardy. Have you not noticed that this administration is using the economy as an excuse to usurp power over private enterprise? Is that supposed to qualify as the constitutional permission to regulate commerce? In contrast, Congress does have this power: "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it." If September 11, 2001 did not constitute an invasion and threat to public safety, I shudder to think what you would consider a sufficient emergency.
President Obama can only articulate "ideas rooted in logic" as long as he has a ghost writer, or a tele-prompter in front of him, otherwise he sticks his foot in his mouth. I view him as a marionette who is helpless if puppeteers are not at hand to pull the strings.
I would certainly be interested to know how you believe that the US was "tarnished morally, economically, militarily, scientifically, and culturally." Morally, I thought the US faired remarkably, managing to fend off many of the repeated legislative and judicial attacks to its Judeo-Christian values. We faired alright economically until the Democrats took over Congress in 2006. Militarily is in the philosophy of the writer, which to some degree all of these are. Unless you are speaking of prohibiting the destruction of human life to attempt to come up with something besides tumors from fetal stem cell research as tarnishing science, I know of no impediment to science during the Bush administration. Culturally, we are in as much of a moral free fall as ever, but somehow I think you would find any attempt to halt that as infringing upon freedom of speech/press/expression, so I'm not sure what you meant by our culture being tarnished.
My objections to President Obama are based completely on what he has done, or stated that he plans to do. I can only hope and pray that apathetic voters who stayed home this past November are shaken up enough to vote in 2010, and that those who were ignorant of Obama's agenda, but voted for him because his skin tone took after his father's side of the family will also wake up to the threat to individual liberty that they have brought down upon us.
In case you haven't noticed, The United States is in the midst of a civil war, and has been for some decades. It is a war of core values, better known as world view. Unlike the War Between the States, itt is tied to no specific geographic region, rendering a truce by geographic division unfeasible. It is a conflict between monotheism and secular-humanism/atheism, which cannot peacefully co-exist for extended lengths of time, as they are in diametric opposition to one another, and the strength of either means repression of the other. It is both sad and ironic that the God-given liberty on which this nation was founded is being stretched and twisted to accomodate those who would expunge that very foundation. If the primary remaining bastion of religious liberty is itself being overwhelmed with socialism, to where can God-fearing people flee? If there is nowhere left to go, is it not understandable that we would advocate against anti-theist tyranny with every fiber possible?

Americans should rise above partisan politics and be willing to criticize a member of their own party. If you swallow every pill from your chosen political priesthood, you are no longer a rational person but are a cult member.
Bachmann was out of line. And if you're going to continue with the "no birth certifcate" bugbear, you should start providing evidence and documentation for your claim.

For starters, this is not a Judeo-Christian country but rather a nation of plurality and liberty. Both Republicans and Democrats have threatened that liberty repeatedly, and the real fight is not against a single party but against a political elite -- call it plebs versus patricians. U.S. Government has been about self-perpetuation for sixty years.

You know what's funny? When I attack a Democrat, I'm called a conservative. When I condemn a Republican, suddenly I'm a liberal. Months back, I even wrote a column attacking the extremists of both parties, and the extremists of both parties tried piling on me.
I call the issue as I see it, and Bachmann's comments are wrong. I have spent months defending classic conservatives and yet the most radical elements of the GOP persist in holding the GOP's reins.
Being independent does not mean you don't speak out when something is wrong. Bachmann is dead wrong, and it echoes a consistently poor quality of arguments against Obama. I'm happy to discuss the pluses and minuses of the president, but that's not what your crowd is doing.

Excellent article. I cannot stand what the Republican Party has become, and miss the days when debates between left and right were at least reasoned. Now everything is soundbites. I also like your comment below about how left and right will attack anyone they think is attacking them and not bother to think, "You know, my party does do that! Maybe we should change it!" Keep writing, your one of the best here, and thanks especially for your article on 'monkey laws' in Congress, I've referred to that one for weeks now.
You said it. Our president did not create this mess, and he should be given time to fix it. How sad is it that I had to accept Bush's decisions for two terms, and now just a couple months in the neoconservatives are calling for war? The GOP lost, but they can't accept it. Too bad. Baffles me how Democrats consider "orderly revolution" to be a threat of "armed revolution" or "violent revolution". However, many Democrats are known for being near illiterate and when not displaying poor understanding of our English language, they are simply displaying deceit.

The Declaration is not the law of the land. The Constitution is. The Declaration justifies high treason by invoking divine rights; the Constitution goes out of its way to avoid all religious language, includes Article 6 in case you're fuzzy on things, and then makes certain that the first ten words of its First Amendment address the issue as well. And even the Declaration doesn't invoke Jehovah or Allah or Yahweh.
Our Constitution is secular, and in its own words is "the supreme law of the land." Not any holy book.
As to the other discussion here... hmmm. I guess I'll have to agree that Malkin is beautiful.
Some thoughts for all readers here at Brian's place.
Our America is challenged by very trying times. Our country is in a mess, we are in a mess. There is no easy out; we are to hurt for years to come. This mess is our fault, literally all of us from our president, to Capitol Hill, to Barby in her pink condo to the wino wetting his pants while passed out against a building in Los Angeles.
We are all at fault. Most Americans spent more than they earned, the rest of us did not stand up and object. From Wall Street to our kids' piggy banks, we either participated in this downfall of America, or stood by idle and silent. We are getting our just deserves.
Coming out of this mess, many lessons will be learned, like maintaining a strict family budget and maintaining a strict government budget. Another lesson we will learn is to keep a very close eye on Wall Street, on our government and on ourselves.
We will learn to be responsible.
A lesson I hope most or all will learn is this petty political partisan bickering is pointless and harmful, especially when we take to twisting words around, take to trying to fool people, for some political agenda. This is very harmful if not a fatal mistake.
"We, the people" must take responsibility. We cannot trust Wall Street, we cannot trust politicians, we can only trust ourselves and this is quite dubious.
Best way to promote and earn trust is to be honest, is to be truthful. I say no more of these Slippery Semantics games. There is no substitute for truth, even when truth hurts.
If you do not like Obama, say so, truthfully. If you do not like Palin, say so, truthfully. If you do not like my words, say so, truthfully.
Stop with the word games. We will never get anywhere while we work at fooling each other. We are in a mess, only truth will get us out of this mess. We must know the truth and we must always hold ourselves to the truth.

I submit that "we" are not. I know no more of the lifestyle and needs of inhabitants of New York City than I do the needs of van Daniken's alien Chariots. This is truly frightening, Bush did more to turn America into a dictatorship than any president in history and yet these people are so concerned with their own interests that they don't care about where the country goes. I have to say that I have been seriously considering leaving this country. Everyone who reads this, don't be surprised when domestic terrorism begins to manifest itself. I find myself incredibly worried for Obama's safety when members of congress are inciting violence, after ignoring eight years of frighteningly strenuous shredding of the constitution.
