Releasing the old and affirming the promise of growth on New Year’s Eve

Unity principle and mental health theory both agree that changing one’s thoughts and actions is a two-pronged process. It is important to release those elements that are no longer supportive of a spiritually healthy and happy life. It is also critical to replace them with goals and desires that will lead to a higher level of spiritual health and happiness.

Unity achieves this symbolically through a burning bowl ceremony, most often completed on or around the New Year. Initially, each participant writes down the things, experiences, conflicts, or disappointments of the past year that they wish to release or itemizes specific negative thoughts and patterns which no longer serve one’s higher self. All participants will have the opportunity to place their lists into the sacred fire of release. This ritual creates the empty space within necessary to accommodate the new.

Following the burning bowl, each participant will compose a letter to God affirming hope, setting intentions, and expressing commitment to personal change for the coming year. These letters help to prepare the consciousness of each participant to receive the new blessings as they are being written. These letters will be sealed in self-addressed envelopes and will be mailed to the participants near the close of the coming year and serve, at that point in time, as reinforcement for the changes that have been accomplished.

Residents of Columbus, Georgia, have the opportunity to experience this meaningful and life-changing ceremony at one of two Unity churches within driving distance.
