Record cold and heavy snow for West Michigan (Photos)

The last week brought heavy lake effect snow and record cold parts of West Michigan. As usual the heaviest snow fell in the favored lake effect snow belts south and west of Grand Rapids. Here are a few of the highest totals:

20.0” near Allendale
18.5” near Bloomingdale
18.1” near Wayland
16.9” near Grandville
16.6” at Muskegon
15.7” near Scottville
13.4” near Oshtemo
12.8” near Walker
11.3” near Paw Paw

The arctic air plunged temperatures to historic cold readings. High temperatures on Tuesday only reached 10° at both Muskegon and Grand Rapids. For Muskegon this ties the previous record of 10° set in 1961. For Grand Rapids this is colder than the previous record of 12° set in 1961.
