What Thomas McConnell started with his instant cover of Paul McCartney's "New" that became an internet sensation (over 9,600 views) has become a virtual contest on YouTube to see who can come up with the best cover of “New,” with new versions coming as recently as Sept. 9.
We took a listen to some of them. The quality ranges from wonderful to not so good.
We liked the After Hours' rock version (960 views) and also Christian Pearl of the Oyster Lovers' (4,450 views) solo piano instrumental version. Ioana Amarita also has a great solo piano version (605 views) that has more of a classical touch.
Danny McEvoy (443 views) does an acoustic guitar version, as does one posted by Getback4 (482 views) and JapaneseMonk (470 views). Jova Quincy (1,312 views) has taken a slightly softer tone that has a full sound. And Ryohei Kanayama's (40 views) is one of the newest, uploaded just Monday.
Pedro Vaiz (1,202 views) sings the song backed by a piano, as does Gabriel Ferrera (460 views). Juan Carlos Calderon Sussoni does a solo version strumming an electric guitar, while this one (32 views) on ukelele is, let's say, interesting.
But by far our favorite of all the versions we found is what Peter Chang (a mere 460 views) has done. It's a wonderful split-screen “violin quartet” version with a charming sound that you can see on this page.
Which one do you like best?
