Most people believe that a water park is a place to simply hang out and relax. Some people may even consider it the ultimate place to simply lay back and go with the flow. For fans of the FlowRider, however, that phrase has a much different meaning.
From March 15 until April 19, the Rapids Water Park held a number of FLOW Jam Days, which acted as a qualifier for the FLOW Series Championship Pro Am to be held on Saturday, April 26. During these special events, registered riders were given the option to bodyboard (boogie board) or flowboard (stand up).
A FLOW Pro was on hand to give instruction as well as judge and select the FlowRider of the Day. Each week’s selected FlowRider of the Day received a certificate for them to compete in the FLOW Series Championship Pro Am, which allowed them to enter the competition without having to pay the registration fee of $30 for amateurs and $40 for professionals.
The FLOW Series Championship Pro Am is a platform for both professional and amateur riders to enter at different divisions including Youth, Junior, Female, Men, Masters and Pros. Sanctioned by FLOW, Flowboarding League of the World, the tournament will be run in a format which has been heavily refined over the past 5 years.
During competition, each rider is given 3 runs and their top two scores count for their total score. The judges base the rider’s score on trick and run execution, overall impression, and difficulty. The top two riders in a four-man heat format progress through to the next round until the four-man final, where the pro riders will compete for a minimum $3,000 cash Pro purse prize. Awards and prizes will be given for finalists in all AM divisions.
Practice and registration for the event takes place on Friday, April 25 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Additional practice and registration is scheduled for Saturday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m., with the competition taking place from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
For your average, waterslide riding and lazy river floating guest, the park offers a large number of slides ranging from mild to wild, as well as several cabanas available to help keep you out of the sun during breaks between attractions. For fans of frozen concoctions that help you hang on, a Tiki Hut will be completed by summer daily operations and serve food, beer and other adult beverages.
