Witnesses on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, S.C. observed an intoxicated man choke and hit a 14 to 16-week-old retriever/collie mix puppy.

According to WMBF News, the disturbing scene unfolded Sunday morning.

Concerned witnesses watched 52-year-old Shane Nur Bacchus of Matthews, N.C. cursing at the puppy, repeatedly yanking up on the pup's leash and striking the pup with his hands and feet.

Those who tried to stop Bacchus' angry tirade were met with threats when they attempted to intervene. Witnesses told the authorities that Bacchus stated he would:

"kick anyone's [expletive] that tried to interfere with his discipline measures."

When the authorities arrived, they observed Bacchus with an open container of alcohol and noted that he was staggering.

The intoxicated man denied that the puppy was his, but claimed that he treated the pup better than the true owner.

Bacchus was taken to jail on charges of public intoxication and animal cruelty, but he quickly was released after paying a ticket of $469 for the animal cruelty charge.

The puppy was taken to a shelter with the hopes that the true owner could be located.
