UPDATE: The NPD only reports sales in the United States, not worldwide.
According to NPD, Nintendo's 3DS has long been the best selling piece of hardware, but right behind that the Xbox 360 has been leading the console race for 32 straight months. Until now. Gametrailers' Geoff Keighley is reporting today that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in September.
Xbox Live's Major Nelson was quick to respond saying, "Congrats to them - They indeed had a good month."
Nintendo's Wii U saw a 200 percent increase in sales but that still wasn't enough to propel it out of last place in console sales.
The console race finally seems to be heating up, or at least reaching saturation levels, just as the next generation of consoles are due. The only question that remains is who will take over the crown, or will it be a battle every single month?
