Prison for starving girl: Wis. father gets five years for starving teen daughter

Prison for starving girl is the headline that is accompanying a story out of Wisconsin, where a 42-year-old father was convicted of abuse and sentenced to five years jail after starving his 15-year-old daughter down to an emaciated condition of only 68 pounds.

The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that Chad Chritton, who was convicted by a jury in November of reckless endangerment, physical abuse, and causing mental harm to a child, “read a statement insisting his daughter suffered from severe emotional and behavioral problems that he couldn't handle, that his job as a trucker kept him away from home and that he didn't notice how thin she had become.”

In Feb. 2012 the unnamed daughter, who is now 17, ran away from her family's home in Madison and was picked up by a passing motorist. According to investigators, the girl said she was confined to the basement of her home for close to five years and had been denied food.

Her abuse did not end at the hands of her father however. Court documents show that the teen was beaten by her stepmother and forced to eat her own excrement. Her stepbrother allegedly forced her to perform oral sex.

“They made me feel like I was dehumanized a lot,” the girl said in a letter to Dane County Circuit Judge Julie Genovese. “It's all thanks to my stupid dad and stepmom for not giving me an education and keeping me locked up for most of my life and making me feel like I was in a scary spot in my life.”

According to the father, his actions came about due to a psychological and mental break after his wife was sent to prison and he lost his job.

“There was no master plan against my daughter,” Chritton said, his voice breaking at times. “I was bailing water from a sinking boat with my bare hands.”

Melinda Drabek-Chritton, the teen's stepmother, is already serving 5 years in the case, and her 20-year-old son, Joshua Drabek, will stand trial on charges of child abuse and sexual assault.
