The preliminary schedule for the cruise port in Portland, Maine shows a variety of activity for the 2014 summer and fall seasons. Between May 30 and Oct. 28, Portland expects to host more than 70,000 passengers from 64 cruise ship visits. All told, 18 ships from 13 cruise lines are scheduled currently to call on Maine’s largest city.
American Cruise Lines will account for 28 of the 64 tentative calls during the season. The line specializes in small-ship cruising—Independence and American Glory carry 98 and 49 passengers, respectively. Portland will serve as home port for the two ships starting in May.
Large cruise ships will arrive starting in late August for the traditional Canada/New England season. Royal Caribbean will make 13 calls on four ships—Brilliance of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, and Legend of the Seas—bringing more than 28,000 passengers to Portland from August through October. Carnival Splendor will call on Portland four times, with a combined passenger capacity of nearly 12,000. Other lines making multiple calls on Portland in 2014 include Holland America Line, Oceania Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line.
Highlights of the 2014 season include maiden calls by Ruby Princess (Sept. 25), Legend of the Seas (Sept. 26), Silver Whisper (Oct. 5), Insignia (Oct. 14), and Crystal Serenity (Oct. 20). The tentative schedule is available on the Port of Portland Maine website.
