Think barbecue isn’t good for you? Think again! When DC-based Pork Barrel BBQ opens the doors to its first restaurant in Washington DC suburb Alexandria, VA later this fall, diners will be in for a healthy treat. This summer while grillmasters all over were out perfecting their techniques, Men’s Health Magazine combed grocery store shelves across the country in search of the healthiest, tastiest foods for men. Among them, barbecue sauce.
After comparing nutrition labels and pitting top BBQ sauce brands against the others in head-to-head taste tests, Men’s Health selected Pork Barrel BBQ’s Original BBQ Sauce as one of “The 125 Best Foods for Men.” According to Men’s Health, the award winning sauce has only 35 calories, less than 1 gram of protein, and 8 grams of carbs. This wasn’t the first accolade Pork Barrel received by way of Men’s Health; earlier this year, sauce aficionados from Men’s Health blog selected Pork Barrel BBQ’s Original BBQ Sauce as their number one go-to grilling favorite.
Men’s Health didn’t start the fire
Heath Hall and Brett Thompson started Pork Barrel in 2008 and in less than one year, their sauces and spice rub were carried in over 1000 retailers in 38 states. They appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank and at the National Harbor’s Food and Wine Festival, then caught the attention of local restaurateur Mike Anderson, owner of Mango Mike’s on Duke St, in Alexandria. The Pork Barrel BBQ taste seemed like a great fit for a restaurant Anderson wanted to open in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria. Pork Barrel’s sauces had become so popular that Anderson and business partner, Bill Blackburn knew they had a winner on their hands. Since then, Pork Barrel BBQ has garnered accolade at barbeque battles from Memphis to Kansas City and claimed the “People’s Choice” award at the 2010 Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle in Washington D.C. Looks like they may be right!
Pork Barrel BBQ’s restaurant is due to open in Del Ray, Alexandria, VA this fall. If the Meat Week menu is any indicator, diners can look out for 14 hr. hickory and oak smoked pulled pork, chicken, ribs, brisket and tried and true barbeque sides like potato salad, coleslaw and of course, cornbread.
Remember – the sauce makes it healthy!
