SpacePolicyOnline.com noted in an October, 21 2013 post that a recent PEW poll listed NASA as America’s second favorite government agency, viewed favorably by 73 percent of respondents. It was beaten only by the Centers of Disease Control which came in at 75 percent. The Department of Defense came in third at 72 percent. Not surprisingly the IRS stood at the bottom at 44 percent. The United States government as a whole only gets a 19 percent favorability rating.
The reason that NASA scores so high in public esteem is not hard to figure out. It is the one government agency that does cool--some would suggest the coolest--things that the federal government does. From landing men on the moon to landing rovers on Mars and satellites to orbit Jupiter and Saturn, the space agency has accomplished great feats. While the public no longer pays rapt attention to space missions, as was the case during the Apollo program, NASA comes in for overwhelming positive feelings from the vast majority of Americans.
