Police officer faces felony charge for allegedly slashing dog's throat

According to Wednesday's Baltimore Sun, a Baltimore, Md., police officer is accused of slashing a restrained dog's throat and now he is facing a felony animal cruelty charge for the brutal act.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Police Deputy Commissioner Dean Palmere called Officer Jeffrey Bolger's actions "outrageous and unacceptable."

Officer Bolger allegedly slit the throat of Nala, a seven-year-old Chinese shar-pei who had escaped from her yard on Saturday. Officers had responded to a call about a dog bite later that same day, and it was shortly after Nala was captured with a catch-pole that the cruel act took place.

According to CNN, charging documents indicate that just prior to the dog being sliced with the knife, Bolger said:

"I'm going to gut this (expletive) thing,"

Officer Bolger's behavior resulted in his arrest and the charge of felony animal cruelty - he has also been suspended without pay.

Nala's guardian, Sarah Gossard, did not hear the details of how her dog died until Wednesday. She told the Baltimore Sun:

These people are supposed to be taking care of our community,"

"and I'm so horrified by what they did and it's completely unnecessary."

The woman who was bitten by Nala had been trying to catch the dog - the wound to her hand has been described as "superficial."

Already, a Facebook page has been established for the slain dog. Click here to find the support page on Facebook.
