Plant your Old Sprouting Potatoes in the garden for new Potatoes

Potatoes will sprout when they have been in storage too long.  These potatoes can be planted to produce new potatoes in the St. Paul, Minnesota area and many other places too.

Next time your bag of potatoes produces sprouts don’t toss them out because they can be planted and produce new potatoes.  The sprouts are what potatoes grow from so take those sprouted potatoes and cut them into pieces being careful not to cut into one of the potato eyes.

Then take these potato cuttings and plant them into your garden.  Make row of holes that are eight inches deep and 18inches apart.  Then place one or tow pieces of sprouted potatoes into each hole and cover them up.

Soon your potatoes will sprout into new plant that can be hilled and allowed to grow until the plants start to die off.  Once the plants start to turn brown you can dig them up and find new potatoes to eat and enjoy.

These new potatoes can be stored in a cool dry place for use in the winter or you can eat them right away.   Usually if your old potatoes will produce sprouts they will also grow into nice sized potatoes.
