Rare photos of Paul McCartney as a young boy, early shots of the Beatles and photos of the pre-Beatles Quarrymen will be among the rarities to be sold in this year's Liverpool Beatles Auction, the Beatles Shop, which sponsors the auction, told Beatles Examiner June 4. The auction will take place in August.

A very young Paul McCartney is featured in a class photograph from Joseph Williams School in 1953. You can see him fourth from the left on the top row. According to The Beatles Shop, the photo dates from the last year of his junior school days before he moved up to the Liverpool Institute after passing the 11 plus exam.

“As a memento of this class, the reverse of this photograph has been signed by all the pupils,” The Beatles Shop told us. “This includes what is probably one of the earliest example of Paul’s signature, tucked away in the bottom left hand corner.”

The Beatles Shop says interest in Beatles school items is always high. They say the value of this item is between £1,500 to £1,750 ($2,512 to $2,930 USD). Additionally, in a separate sale, the auction is also selling a Liverpool Institute Green Book that includes the names of both Paul McCartney and brother Michael who were students there.

One item that has gotten a lot of buzz, thanks to a Liverpool Echo article, is a photograph of the Beatles, then with Pete Best as drummer, and some teenage fans that was taken at St John's Hall in Tuebrook, Liverpool in 1961. The negative for this image and the copyright along with four other negatives taken the same night is up for sale in the auction. The value of the five negatives is estimated at £1,750 to £2,500 ($2,930 to $4,186 USD.)

Also featured will be three very rare vintage prints of photographs of the Quarrymen. The photos are of the band, including a young John Lennon, performing in Rosebery Street in June 1957 to celebrate 750 years since Liverpool was issued its charter by King John. The pictures were taken before Paul McCartney or George Harrison joined the group. The value of the photos is £175 to £225 ($293 to $377) each.

The 2014 Liverpool Beatles Auction will be held beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 23 at The Paul McCartney Auditorium at The Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts in Liverpool. Items will be available for public viewing from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Paul McCartney Auditorium.
