The first half never really got going as both teams struggled to create any real sustained attacking play in a scoreless first half.
Melbourne Heart didn't waste any time in the second half going on the attack as Justin Pasfield dropped Golgol Mebrahtu's long range effort allowing David Williams to sneak in and round the keeper for the opener.
The Mariners woke up and had one solid period where they were on top and probably should have equalized as Storm Roux was able to find Nick Firzgerald but he could only send his effort over the bar.
They paid the price for that miss as Heart came straight back with Mebrahtu able to feed Iain Ramsay who crossed in for Williams to put Heart 2-0 up with half an hour to play.
The Mariners then went on the attack and in the 71st minute received what seemed to be a soft penalty as Patrick Kisnorbo had his arm on Matt Simon allowing the referee to point to the spot and Marcos Flores to open his account for the year with a penalty.
Five minutes later another penalty came to the Mariners as Patrick Gerhardt made contact with the ball allowing Flores to make it two and give the Mariners a shot of taking all three points.
Heart still could have managed to seal the win in the 83rd minute as Williams was able to get a shot away from close range that could have sealed his hattrick but was denied by a Pasfield save.
