Painkillers found in ice cream cones at a Tesco grocery stores sparked a high-profile police investigation according to a Jan. 1 Canada Journal news report. The British retailer recalled its in-house brands of ice cream throughout the U.K and Ireland after customers found painkillers in ice cream. Authorities say they believe it was done deliberately.

The major crime unit of North Yorkshire Police Department launched a probe after painkillers were found in ice cream products at Tesco by two customers.

Note : Fresh & Easy, a subsidiary of Tesco, is not part of the ice cream recall.

Painkiller tablets were discovered in the store's brand of chocolate and nut ice cream cones back in November (with "best by" dates through July 2014). Sources say the retail products are supplied by well-known R&R Ice Cream, a distributor which also produces a host of Nestlé ice cream products for sale.

Thankfully, management moved in quickly to remove all products from store shelves due to contamination risk. Furthermore, they ask all customers to immediately discard the items or bring them back to the store of purchase for a full refund.

As a precautionary measure, we have issued a product recall on a Tesco chocolate and nut ice - cream cone products after two individual cones were found to contain a tablet for pain relief. We are urgently investigating this incident with our supplier and ask customers to return this product to their local store," read a statement from a Tesco spokesperson.

Police and store insiders believe the ice cream cones may have been laced with painkillers at the factory, not at the store level.

Painkillers found in ice cream cones are of a serious matter. Luckily, there have been no injuries or deaths associated with the recall at this point. It underscores the importance of more quality measures being put in place to safeguard the world's commercial food supply.
