Otter eats alligator: Florida swamp battle ends with otter destroying alligator

It has not been a good week for the crocodile and alligator families in the news. Earlier this week, news of a snake eating a crocodile in Australia had surfaced, but now the U.S. Firs and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is adding fuel to the fire. On March 5, 2014, the Huffington Post showed pictures that had been posted by USFWS showing an otter attacking an alligator and actually eating it.

More Photos

The images of the otter eating an alligator were taken by Geoff Walsh back in 2011, but the USFWS has just brought them to light this week once the snake and crocodile fight took place.

As can be seen in the image stake in Central Florida's Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, the otter appears to be in control of the alligator the whole fight. Some of the images even make it appear as if the gator is crying out for help.

Otters typically weigh between 10-20 pounds, and it just wouldn't seem as if one could overtake an alligator, but that's exactly what happened in the swamp battle.

Captions with the photos state that the otter dragged the juvenile alligator up onto the bank and began biting it from behind. After they moved out of sight of the photographer, "crunching noises" could be heard, and indications were that the otter was eating the alligator.

Otters are known as apex predators in numerous freshwater habitats, but they usually feed on slow-moving fish and crustaceans.
