Oklahoma City Police announced the death of a K9 officer on Monday afternoon. The organization's Facebook page stated Kye, a three-year-old Belgian Malinois had been with the department for two years.

Kye was stabbed while assisting in the apprehension of a robbery suspect on Sunday night as the culprit tried to escape on I-35.

The suspect was shot and killed by Kye's handler as the officer attempted to separate the suspect from the police dog. Kye died as a result of his injuries.

More than 9,000 shares on the Oklahoma City Police Facebook page shared the department's sentiments about the tragic loss of Kye. Leigh Ann Hudson sadly posted:

"My heart and prayers go out to his human partner as he faces the loss of his canine partner and friend. I had read about Kye and was amazingly smart and so beautiful. Thank you for your service Kye! And for ALL our police officers, human and canine!"

The officer is now on routine administrative duty pending an investigation.

Rest in peace Kye, and thank you for your service.
