Obama gun control: In the midst of a potential foreign invasion of Syria, the Obama administration announced new initiatives on gun control, making executive decisions and bypassing Congress. The new legislation deals with military-grade surplus weapons and guns that are registered to corporations, reports The Associated Press on Aug. 29 via Yahoo! News.
The new actions show the president has not lost sight of the cause that his administration has spearheaded after the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.
“Four months after a gun control drive collapsed spectacularly in the Senate, President Barack Obama added two more executive actions to a list of 23 steps the White House determined Obama could take on his own to reduce gun violence,” says the AP report.
The latest executive decision focuses on a loophole that allows individuals, including those with potential felony records who would be ineligible to purchase firearms, to skirt the law by registering certain types of arms, such as machine guns and short-barreled shotguns, to either legitimate of dummy corporations and trusts.
Individuals associated with such companies must now undergo the same process of registering and passing backgrounds checks before any gun will be sold to their company.
"It's a very artful dodge to get around people who are not capable, constitutionally or legally, of owning a weapon," Vice President Joe Biden said.
The other hub decision passed down from the Obama administration will close an export / import law that allowed weapons sold or donated by the U.S. to allies to be imported by private companies. To date, 250,000 of such weapons have been reintroduced into the U.S. since 2005.
The National Rifle Association, once again, immediately dismissed the administration's moves as skewed, saying the focus needs to be on criminals, not law-abiding owners.
“The Obama administration has once again completely missed the mark when it comes to stopping violent crime,” said NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam. “This administration should get serious about prosecuting violent criminals who misuse guns and stop focusing its efforts on law-abiding gun owners.”
Until Congress unties the President’s hands, it would seem that the Obama administration is doing what they can in an effort to stem the tide of gun related violence on American soil.
