Last September, President Barack Obama's reelection team was criticized for selling artwork featuring an American flag in which the Obama campaign logo replaced the stars, which represented the states. At the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, the "Obama Flag" made a comeback, in a new, outrageous, and incredibly narcissistic way.
In photos released by Getty Images, a flag bearing President Obama's face in the starfield was carried in the march. It is the same flag the Lake County Democratic Club in Florida flew outside their headquarters last year, but later removed after protests. Twitchy.com also reported on the Obama flag flying at the event by posting tweets and pictures from those at the event.
A tweet by "BuzzFeedBenny" revealed that the person carrying the flag was a woman wearing a National Education Association (NEA) t-shirt. The woman has not been identified, and it is not known if the woman is a teacher.
The Federal Flag Code forbids any changes or alterations to the flag, including adding faces or logos.
The march commemorated the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington led by Dr. Martin Luther King, who delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech at the event. This year, Rev. Al Sharpton was one of the organizers at the event, and spoke at the rally held on the National Mall. Many in the march held signs opposing "stand your ground" laws and supporting Trayvon Martin.
The "Obama flag" is available for purchase online from websites including UltimateFlag.com, who sells the 3 X 5 foot flag for $24.95. They state on their website "For those who are concerned, this flag is not a violation of US Flag Code or any other law as this is an artistic design based on the US flag, not an actual US flag. We did not take a US flag and change it. Legally this is art."
