The Oakland Raiders thought they found their quarterback of the future in Terrelle Pryor, which is why they released Matt Flynn earlier in the season. However, after Pryor’s concussion, the Raiders started rookie Matt McGloin, who has looked good in one game, a win over the Houston Texans, but has lost three of his four games that he played and is not playing better than Pryor was. According to ESPN on Dec. 6, Oakland has said that Pryor remains their backup quarterback but they plan to use him in some formations this week against the New York Jets. While Terrelle Pryor is not the same kind of quarterback as Tim Tebow, it looks like the Raiders may utilize him in the same formations that Tebow specialized in – read options. Pryor is an explosive running back and can really open up the passing game with his legs, something that McGloin can’t do. Also, while the Raiders’ coaches think that McGloin is more accurate than Pryor, that is not true as Pryor has a higher completion rating and the two have the same touchdown-to-interception ratio.
This week, they get a team they could beat in the New York Jets. It has been one week since the Jets benched rookie quarterback Geno Smith and brought in Matt Simms. Smith will be back at quarterback this week, and good news for him is that most of his injured wide receiver corps are returning this week, so he has a chance to prove himself to his coaches once again against a beatable team in Oakland.
