"The National Rifle Association says today it's opposing Elena Kagan's nomination for the Supreme Court and will score her vote, which could further discourage Republicans from voting for her," NBC's Pete Williams reports.
From today's NRA-ILA news release:
The NRA is strongly opposed to the confirmation of Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court. This vote matters and will be a part of future candidate evaluations.
That's good news. NRA members should let the Association know they approve this move.
What remains to be explained:
How will the vote factor in to candidate evaluations?
How has the earlier Sotomayor vote been factored in?
Noting the joint statement by NRA Executive VP Wayne LaPierre and ILA Executive Director Chris Cox that "There may be no vote a United States Senator casts that is more important than a vote to confirm a nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court," don't you agree we ought to know, and that the "punishment" should fit the "crime"?

It's the NRA; it's a little hard to care anymore about their "ratings". They rendered them pointless a long, long time ago.
Let me correct that: Actually, inasmuch as an NRA rating goes, I'm inclined to view _any_ positive rating by them with very dubious eye.
At least they've acquitted themselves somewhat after DISCLOSE... I don't think it's going to stop the landslide of backlash against them for that or Sotomayor.
Kagan is not a judge. Why is Hon on the name plate in the AP

I've noticed a lot of NRA bashing lately. The only thing two humans can agree on is how a third one is doing everything wrong. I've always considered opinions worth a lot more when they are paired with suggested solutions.

I spent most of fifteen years suggesting solutions. (Including little things like, "Don't cancel memberships and try to con the guy into renewing _again_ and sending more money." "Don't promise to finance a lawsuit, then renege after the suit is filed," is another one that would have been easy to implement.) The NRA didn't listen. I don't bother anymore; they're a lost cause.

So when was NRA wrong before or after they started posing as though they give a damn? Both, they meant their first position and do not mean this new one. You can bet all you own that they negotiated with our enemies to stay plugged in. The price to be future acquiescence if the lawmakers do not rescind the invitations to all the "best" dinners.
Well, citizenjohn, I will let you know what I'm doing and, if you like it as a suggestion, go for it.
I will not support the NRA in any way from now on.
This is not being done lightly, and I stand to lose quite a bit thereby, but integrity is more important. The NRA has had its last "second chance."
Now the rubber hits the road as they say and we will see how much "CLOUT" the NRA still has in the senate. If they can stop Kagan and punish those senators who vote for her then they will be back on the road to recovery in the eyes of many gun owners. But if Kagan wind her nomination I think that will sound the death bell for the NRA. If the NRA can stop Kagan then they have to go further and nail those senators who defied them and the gun owners of America. They have to acomplish both things to stay alive as a viable force in the gun owners world. Now we will see if they have the power to pull it off. Kagan get in and the NRA loses for the final time. Kagan loses and the senators who voted for her skate the NRA loses again. The NRA does both they have a chance to ask for that second chance at public support.
Washington D.C. is not a part of America. It is apart from America. Philosophically, politically, it is closer to Brussels, Belgium or Zurich, Switzerland. When 1.2 million Americans marched on that city you were in a foreign country and they did not welcome you. Who are those people?
Sotomayor simply barefaced lied about her position on gun rights and then voted against the individual right to keep and bear arms in McDonald vs. Chicago. Kagan is clearly doing the same thing, and seems sure to be confirmed WITHOUT EVEN A FIGHT OR WORD OF PROTEST FROM ANYONE !!. It looks like George Soros has bought off THE WHOLE GANG. It looks to me like it won't be too long and it will be game over for ALL constitutional rights. The liars and the liberal commie/socialists are winning. I wish I were wrong, but that's the way it looks to me.
Frankly the way I read the letters, "NRA" is: Never Renew Again. Sadly its a painful show to watch the NRA in today's world.
I would say that the real reason the NRA decide to take a stand against Kagan is the Codrea factor.
The Codrea factor seems to have struck a nerve on the backside of liberty and is causing people to get involved.
In my opinion the NRA was going to give the Kagan confirmation hearings lip service until the Codrea factor kicked in gear.
I would like to encourage people to contact the ISRA and tell them NO more stunts or game playing like they did on HB5832.
Every piece of anti-gun legislation should be opposed.
The NRA/ISRA are afraid of looking soft on crime by not supporting reasonable gun control laws. So they support strengthening of certain laws just to look tough on crime.
At the same time the ISRA tell us gun control is a disease and that we gun owners are the cure.
It cant be both ways NRA/ISRA if gun control is bad then ALL gun control is bad
I wrote several letters to, and made several phone calls to the NRA about the Disclose Act HR 5175 to no avail. All I got was the form letter response about the NRA being a siingle issue organization. I was not surprised when we were told the NRA had told their board members not to oppose MS. Kagan. I am surprised however they have since said they will now oppose her. It won't have any effect on my decision to not renew my membership in the NRA which was due this month.
In their April issue of America's First Freedom in Wayne LaPieree' column "Standing Guard" replying to Senator Sheldon from Rhode Island, He wrote "Well senator, there is--it's called freedom from tyranny. And, like fighting attacks on the Second Amendment, the NRA will never back down in this landmark battle against censorship and in our efforts to defend the entire Bill of Rights." I no longer wish to belong to an organization more interested in getting an advantage for it's self than in defending freedom for all.
If the NRA wants our support they should listen to what is being said and DO IT.
We want lawsuits filed to repeal EVERY GUN CONTROL LAW.
Do that and your cup will overflow with support.
Geee, I wonder what took them so long? I spotted her obvious Marxist bent (they hate you and they hate YOUR, guns, but not their's) immediately. (they hate America and everything it ever stood for too)
I'm as dumb as a brick but I figured it out! Sure glad they don't get any of my money anymore. They don't even call me anymore! Their budget must be down a little.

AMEN!!!
When the NRA starts working for the repeal of the Illinois FOID card and the other infringements of my GOD given rights I will become a member.
I might even become a life member if they get rid of the 68 GCA as well
Oh yeah, I forgot. Anyone who votes for her is a TRAITOR commie expletive.
I apologize for my unkind references regarding that profession, and to the ladies thereof, who shouldn't really be maligned in such company.
This is an ongoing war on our rights, when you all realize we are at war with the government, the better off you will be. It is time to take the polititians to account and declare a cease fire, or the war may go hot. Enough of the constant assaults from diffrent directions, they will never stop these assaults unless we make them stop. There should be a consequence to the next public official to even suggest any kinds of infringements on any rights, or they go to jail for a loooong time. If there is no consequence, this will continue unabated. Sooner or later, we will lose in this long drawn out war, unless we make the strategic move of saying no more...or else.
NRA should score the Kagan vote and then go back and retroactively score the Sotomayor vote. After all, as we saw in the Heller and McDonald 5/4 squeekers, SCOTUS has a powerful effect on government respect for our rights or lack of same. We've also seen how a person nominated for Associate Justice was thrown softballs by senators of both parties in her hearings, cruised to easy confirmation, then joined with the dissent claiming we have no individual right to individual arms or self defence. Essentially senators failed to recognise and expose an enemy of 2A and they should be held to task for it. It would also be very difficult for Sen. Reid to keep his NRA A rating given his recent yes votes on Holder and Sotomayor and soon on Kagan if they were scored properly.
Got something to say?
