Now this is my idea of a great way to watch Super Bowl 2014. Aboard a cruise ship. Plenty of beer. My own comfy stateroom.
The only thing to make it perfect is if my team, the Indianapolis Colts, win Super Bowl XLVIII.
It is definitely a first, as far as I know, that a brand new cruise ship will serve as a massive lodging space and entertainment venue for the annual football blast.
Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Norwegian Getaway will be docked at Pier 88 in Manhattan for the Feb. 2 game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The ship will be transformed into a Bud Light-themed hotel for its first few days in action.
The “hotel” will include the ship and the adjacent Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Lodging will be available Thursday before the game through Monday morning. The Getaway is expected to provide lodging for 4,000 lucky guests in 1,900 staterooms.
Constructed in Germany, the Getaway is due to debut in January 2014. The 146,600-ton Norwegian Getaway is a sister ship to the Norwegian Breakaway, which entered service in 2013.
The largest ship to homeport year-round in Miami, the Getaway will sail Eastern Caribbean voyages. In honor of its new home, the ship’s hull boasts a swirly colorful ocean mural designed by David Le Batard, a Cuban American artist based in Miami.
The Getaway features a sprawling, deck-top fun zone with five water slides, a restaurant-lined boardwalk, large production shows including Broadway’s Legally Blonde, and a giant, two-deck spa. I certainly hope my New Year will include a cruise on this marvelous new ship.
