News of a possible new 12GB Playstation 3 for North America hit earlier this week from Engadget when a listing showed up at Canadian retailer FutureShop. A promotional email received by this Examiner from Best Buy on Friday confirms that the new console is will hit stores on Aug. 18 with this particular retailer offering a bundle featuring The Last of Us and Uncharted 3.

Update: The 12GB PS3 is available at Best Buy for $199.99 by itself or for $259.98 bundled with Uncharted 3: Game of the Year Edition and The Last of Us.

The weekly promotional email for the upcoming sales announced, "Free Uncharted 3: Game of the Year with New PS3 12GB Console & The Last of Us, Plus Free Shipping."

The listing makes it unclear whether this is similar to the current Uncharted 3: Game of the Year Bundle for the 250GB PS3 which retails for $269.99. The FutureShop listing suggests the 12GB will cost $199.99 by itself but the addition of The Last of Us would likely drive the price up to around $225 to $250 as it seems highly unlikely that the the recently released hit game would be sold with the console at a significant discount.

As the name suggests, the 12GB PS3 is meant to be a much cheaper version of the new model that was recently released. In addition to exchanging the slot-loading Blu-ray drive for a top-loading drive, the 12GB does not come with a hard drive. Instead, it the 12GB of storage is all flash memory just like the 4GB Xbox 360 console.

Edit: This should have been made clear before but the 12GB PS3 can be upgraded with a 2.5-inch hard drive of your choice. However, a mounting bracket will be needed as well which is sold separately for $10 to $20. Here is a decent tutorial video explaining the upgrade steps.
