'NCIS' season 12 premiere promo: Gibbs and McGee fight to survive

The 12th season of "NCIS" is going to get off to an exciting start, if the promo released on Friday, Aug. 29, for the premiere, "Twenty Klicks," is any indication. Two of the team will be in some serious trouble, but will the others be able to get to them in time or will they have to save themselves?

In the "NCIS" season 12 premiere, Gibbs and McGee travel to Russia to safely escort home an NCIS computer engineer connected to classified intel. However, when their mission is compromised, they are forced to go off the grid while being hunted by a Russian mercenary group. Those still in D.C. use every asset and inter-agency contact they have to try to find them. The first photo from the episode only showed Tony, Bishop and Vance in the office, but now we have some context for that thanks to the first preview.

The "Twenty Klicks" promo shows that the trouble begins in the air for Gibbs and McGee when their transport is shot down by a surface-to-air missile. They're not going to have much time to even assess their injuries because trouble is coming their way. Not only is the Russian mercenary group coming for them, but Gibbs is also going to be facing off with the wildlife of the area. That said, some things don't change, as he declares, "Gear up." Back in D.C., Vance tells Tony the jet is fueled and ready for him to go, and it looks like Gibbs and McGee are going to need all the help they can get.

"NCIS" season 12 premieres Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. on CBS. What do you think of the first "Twenty Klicks" promo?
