The New York Times and other media outlets are reporting that John Podesta, President Bill Clinton's former chief of staff, has agreed to serve as counselor to President Obama for one year. Podesta will reportedly assist the president on "“matters related to the health care law, administration organization and executive actions," and will also "focus in particular on climate change issues."
Podesta's appointment as the new "executive power" czar should set off alarm bells across the nation. It is tantamount to an admission by President Obama that his intention is to shift his ongoing trampling of the Constitution into high gear. Obama has already promised to circumvent Congress in order to accomplish his tyrannical goals. In light of his plummeting approval and weakened position after the ObamaCare rollout debacle, ruling by fiat is likely his only option.
To those who know Podesta's history, it is no secret that bypassing Congress through the use of executive orders is his preferred method of implementing progressive policies. In Nov. 2010 he co-authored a 48-page Center for American Progress paper, along with Sarah Rosen Wartell, titled “The Power of the President: Recommendations to Advance Progressive Change.”
“The U.S. Constitution and the laws of our nation grant the president significant authority to make and implement policy,” Podesta wrote in the paper, "“These authorities can be used to ensure positive progress on many of the key issues facing the country through executive orders, rulemaking, agency management, convening and creating public-private partnerships, commanding the armed forces, [and] diplomacy. The ability of President Obama to accomplish important change through these powers should not be underestimated.”
Apparently Podesta doesn't understand, or more likely doesn't care about, the separation of powers, or the fact that exectutive orders were meant to be used by presidents only in emergency situations, not to implement policies that Congress will not enact through legislation. The president's role is to uphold and propose laws, not make them. The framers of the Constitution instituted checks and balances specifically to prevent the president from wielding too much power, to ensure no future commander-in-chief could use the authority of the office to force his personal will upon the people. That obviously means nothing to Barack Obama, or to his party.
Reading Podesta's paper will help you understand exactly why he has been selected to help push President Obama's progressive agenda. It includes a laundry list of far-left policies that would never be passed by the current Congress, or be accepted by any well-informed person in this country who values individual liberty.
The recent move by Harry Reid and the Democrat-controlled Senate to ban the filibuster of presidential appointees is another clear sign that Barack Obama intends to spend his final years in office behaving as a dictator. It ensures that the president will be able to stack the D.C. courts with progressive-leaning judges who will rubber stamp any and all executive orders he issues.
The Republicans are shirking their responsibility to protect and uphold the Constitution by refusing to begin impeachment proceedings against an out of control president. Impeachment would cause a constitutional crisis, according to some GOP leaders. In reality, allowing President Obama to continue to do end-runs around Congress, and to arrogantly thumb his nose at the limits placed on presidential power by the framers, has already created a constitutional crisis. We are in the midst of it at this very moment.
Our government is broken. Few inside the beltway display any interest whatsoever in restoring the Constitution and returning power to the citizens of this country, where it belongs. The impetus is now on the American people to act, and it that doesn't happen soon there won't be a recognizable America left to stand up for.
