Tonight's Food Network episode of "Mystery Diners" was titled, "Lactose Intolerant" where Charles Stiles and his crew of undercover diners came to Cheesie’s Pub & Grub to meet with Chris Johnston to find out why there are a large amount of winners of the Cheesie’s Challenge; his restaurant’s one-hour challenge to eat a sixteen inch, seven and a half pound grilled cheese sandwich with a pound of fries on the side. The winner receives, their picture on the wall, a tee shirt, their money back for the sandwich and two hours of complimentary drinks on the house. In the last two months, there have been nine winners.
Charles and Destiney came to meet with Chris, who found out that their costs for food and liquor have been rising, while their sales have remained the same. Something does not add up, and they need help to find out why. They will focus on Joe the manager, server Patrick and cashier Sara. Destiney and David, a competitive eater will pose as customers to take the Cheesie’s Challenge.
When the cameras were in place, Chris was watching the operation with Charles. He noticed Sara gave explicit instructions to David about the challenge. It cost $40 to enter the challenge and when Sara announced it, the place went wild with enthusiasm. Destiney came in with her friends, and wanted to give it a try, while David, could not finish the challenge. When Destiney asked Patrick if she could get help with the challenge, he told her to make sure nobody was looking, but he would not give David an extra drink of water. Patrick even took a bite of Destiney’s sandwich. When someone told Sara that someone was cheating, she looked the other way. Now another person, a friend of Patrick, won the challenge too. As they poured shot after shot of tequila, the profits were going down the drain. Then to add insult to injury, Patrick was handed a wad of cash from his friends and even gave Sara some money.
Chris had enough of this thievery, and Chris brought back Patrick and Sara to see themselves on film. Both were fired and after four months, Cheesie’s has changed the rules of the challenge, and both employees have apologized and moved on.
Had it not been for the "Mystery Diners," this cheating could have been the end of this fun restaurant.
