Muslim clerics issue a fatwa against Mars colonists

According to a February 19, 2014 story in the UK Daily Mail, a group of Muslim clerics called the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment located in the United Arab Emirites has issued a fatwa against anyone seeking to colonize the planet Mars. This is apparently in reaction to the Dutch based Mars One project that proposes to send people on one way trips to the Red Planet to colonize it.

The reasoning goes a little like this:

Suicide is forbidden to Muslims.

Attempting to live on Mars is so hazardous that death is likely, thus making it akin to suicide.

There is “no righteous reason” for good Muslims to try to colonize Mars.

Therefore:

Muslims attempting to colonize Mars are committing a sin for which they will be punished in the afterlife.

While a number of Muslims are among the 200,000 who have applied to be part of the Mars One colony project, it is unknown how many have made it to the short list of 1,058 people. It is also unknown what the position. The position of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment on the subject of suicide bombing is unknown. Would a suicide bomber who traveled to Mars to kill infidel Mars colonists be committing a sin or would he die as a martyr? That is no doubt a thorny, theological question.
