Music festival preview: Third Red White and Blue Ball takes place Saturday

The third annual Red, White and Blue Ball (RWBB) is set for this Saturday at the Ball Farm located near the Circuit of Americas racetrack in Dale, Texas. The event features headliner, Shinyribs with Kevin Russell (The Gourds) and more Austin talent in a daylong Fourth of July themed music festival with a huge water slide, free camping and a family friendly atmosphere. If you missed Shinyribs due to their Blues on the Green show postponement last night, this is a chance to see them perform with other Austin bands. Notable acts appearing at RWBB include songwriter Danny Malone, Leopold & His Fiction and a late night dance-party set by the Golden Dawn Arkestra.

The RWBB is not a typical music festival by today's standards. The fest is a throwback to the time when neighbors got together to celebrate American independence by sharing BBQ, watching fireworks and singing folk songs around a campfire. In that spirit, organizers allow fans to bring their own drinks (glass containers are prohibited), camp out for free and ride a giant waterslide at a venue that feels authentic rather than a corporate sponsored, manufactured "festival experience." There are no high priced alchohol options, long lines or crowded stages. In fact, all the performances take place on a single, covered stage so fans have the opportunity to catch every single band performing.

Basically we take a local show and put it in a festival setting. Each year we book some of our favorite local bands and create a unique experience around them. This year we are excited to have a number of artists from SprATX coming out to do live art throughout the night, and we'll have fireworks, a huge water slide, food trucks, late-night jams in the campground, bonfires and other fun stuff. The Ball Farm is a beautiful setting for the event, and the bands have a few surprises in store, so we're looking forward to another great event. - Lawrence Boone (RWBB co-founder)

The roster of talent on the bill is nothing to sneeze at. If you have heard The Gourds then you know Kevin Russell's Shinyribs put on an equally good show. Danny Malone is an incredibly engaging singer and his catchy songs have a way of rattling around the listener's head long after his song is over. The Gents are infectiously energetic and fun to watch. We are looking forward to seeing duo, Chipper Jones live after hearing songs recommended by Boone on his Covert Curiosity music blog. The entire line-up and schedule is below.

There are a few items ticket buyers should be aware of. There will be a couple of food trucks and italian ice for sale so organizers encourage attendees to bring a little cash for food and parking. Campers and folks who want to stay late to dance to Golden Dawn Arkestra should be aware that the gates will be locked at 1 a.m. for safety and security purposes. The gates will re-open Sunday at 6 a.m. Advance $25 tickets (kids under 12 enter free) are still available.

Frankly we are looking forward to getting over there Saturday to catch all the good tunes while hanging out on a beautiful piece of Texas land with good folks in Austin's backyard.
