Monty Oum RTX 2014 Interview

This Fourth of July weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Rooster Teeth's Monty Oum at RTX 2014.

Gaining attention for his impressive involvement in a number of animated projects, Monty officially joined the Rooster Teeth team in 2010. Although he initially acted as a character animator and choreographer, his role in the company has rapidly grown.

In 2012, Rooster Teeth announced a new series that Monty himself had created: RWBY. Now only weeks away from its Volume 2 premiere, RWBY has quickly latched itself onto the hearts of RT and outside fans alike.

When asked about Rooster Teeth and his time in the video game industry, Monty said the following:

"Rooster Teeth lets me make the cool stuff right now. They don't bar me in any way, they promote it."

What is RTX?

Starting as a comparatively small gathering of fans in 2011, RTX was originally intended as a celebration of Rooster Teeth and their dedicated community. Although the event has certainly retained this, it has seen some remarkable growth in just a few short years.

In 2011, the event has about 500 members of the RT community in attendance. The event has quickly blown up with over 30,000 fans packed into the large Austin Convention Center in 2014. Likewise, the event itself has expanded, with exhibitors from various gaming and internet-related companies joining in on the fun. Rooster Teeth now describes the event as “a convention hosted by Rooster Teeth, where we celebrate internet culture and gaming.”
