The Monterey County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescued 14 dogs and puppies out of a parked vehicle on Monday afternoon according to a press release from the organization.

The older model Subaru was parked along Virgin and Montecito Avenues.

"The 4 adult dogs and 10 puppies, all pomeranians and chihuahuas, were found stacked in seven tiny filthy crates in a cluttered older model Subaru parked at Virgin Ave and Montecito Ave in Monterey. The dogs were kept as many as four to a crate, and the crates averaged only 20” long by 13” wide by 11” tall in size. The crates were so small that many of the tiny dogs were unable to stand up straight."

The owner of the dogs told authorities she had planned to "sell the puppies for $2,000 in Carmel."

The dogs are all being examined by veterinarians. If anyone has purchased a puppy recently from this person, they are being asked to notify authorities. The SPCA is thankful to all of the people who called in regarding this situation and who have been providing more information.

The Monterey County SPCA plans to pursue this case with the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.
