Building a fashion empire is hard work. Motivational speaker and fashion entrepreneur Scotty McGee is halfway there. McGee’s indie fashion label Moetivs has everything the urban Christian could want – Fashionable, durable, quality clothing and accessories with a Christ-centered message.
Recently, I caught up with him and asked burning questions we had such as, “Who designs your amazing gear, “ and “how does a clothing company’s ethos change from chasing money to chasing Messiah.
When, how, who and where did you guys get started? Why a Christian clothing line?
Scotty: The line actually started in 2003. It started as a result of my brother’s death. I made T-shirts as a way of coping with the loss. M.O.E. came from my brother whose nickname was MOE. It wasn’t until 2006 that I decided to turn the RIP tees into a clothing line. When I decided to start the line, MOE stood for the secular acronym money over everything. It wasn't until I received salvation and God breathed on it that it became Messiah Over Everything.
The company name, Moetivs, came during prayer time one morning when the Lord instructed me to name the brand Moetivs. He confirmed the message of MOE by taking me to Romans 9:5 which says, “For the Messiah is God over everything forever blessed. Amen.”
How would you describe the look/styling associated with your brand? What type of person would look best in your gear?
Scotty: Our brand is urban, but classy and geared toward extreme comfort as we use some of the finest garments available in the industry. Our clothing is geared to all--both young and old. We have MOE Young'ns, which is our children's line. We also have Moe4Her for the women and Moe4Him for men. We also recent launched our proMOE wear which is professional MOE that consist of polos/button ups. We strive to provide our clients with gear they can wear in any setting i.e. the work place/school/mall/etc.
What’s the message you are trying to send with your apparel and accessories?
Scotty: Our mission is to affect society and culture through our influence in the clothing industry. The message we are trying to send through the MOE Movement is for it to serve as a daily reminder to keep God first! It’s applying and living M.O.E. -- Messiah Over Everything. In any and every thing you do, check your Moetivs behind it. Be sure you're not doing it to please the lust and desires of your flesh, but rather to glorify God's kingdom.
The fashion industry can be brutal, so what keeps you guys going? What distinguishes you from the other guys?
Scotty: Our faith and the vision God gave us for Moetivs is what keeps us pushing the brand forward. What separates us from other brands is that we are a Believers brand that's geared towards non-Believers or BBYTR’s as well. BBYTR is an acronym for (believe but yet to receive) salvation. We all at some point of time were in the world and knew of God, but hadn't received the great salvation we gained access to through Jesus' sacrifice on the cross! The example of this I often use during speaking engagement is from my youth. I was 16 years old and had just got my driver’s license. I remember getting pulled over by the police and praying and asking God to get me out of it. During that time I was not born again, but yet I believed-- Hence BBYTR. Many people can relate to story as such especially pre-salvation.
Fashion and music seem to go together for some reason. Do you guys sponsor any bands or have a close relationship with any artists?
Scotty: We have relationship with a few artists. Some are Brinson, Uncle Reece, CBN Praise and Worship leader Demetria Stallings and Jordan Riley.
Where do you see your brand in 5 years? 10?
Scotty: In 5 years I see Moetivs being a monument for Believers to stand on and its meaning being applied in all areas of their lives! In 10 years our goal for Moetivs is to be the Polo and Nike of Believers clothing!
Where can people find your brand?
Scotty: Our clothing can be found online at our website www.moetivsclothing.com.
