California mall shooting update: Fiancée shot in head calls 911, then dies

In a California Mission Valley Mall shooting update, San Diego police have identified the mall shooting victim as 22-year-old Ilona Flint from San Diego. The second victim in the California Mission Valley Mall shooting is 22-year-old Salvatore Belvedere, who is still fighting for his life. Both San Diegans were shot in the head, reported U-T San Diego on Dec. 24, 2013.

The Mission Valley Mall shooting happened early Tuesday morning in the Westfield Mission Valley mall parking lot outside of Macy’s on Camino Del Rio North, just east of downtown San Diego. Macy’s was open overnight for last-minute Christmas shoppers.

Around 1:15 a.m., a woman called 911 to report that she was shot in the head and her torso. She told the 911 dispatcher that she was in a car in the parking lot near Macy’s.

When San Diego police officers arrived in the Mission Valley Mall parking lot and located the car with the victims, they found the woman dead in the car and a second victim, a man, also with a shot to the head. He was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital and is fighting for his life.

The Mission Valley Mall shooter is being described as a man of unknown race possibly in his 20s, 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11 tall, wearing tan pants and an unknown color shirt. He may have been driving a 2008 to 2011 dark gray Honda sedan.

California mall shooting update:

According to an updated Dec. 25 San Diego CBS news report, the young man still fighting for his life after the California mall shooting has been identified as 22-year-old Salvatore Belvedere. The woman who died at the scene after calling 911 has been identified by family members as Belvedere's brother's fiancée. On Wednesday, she was identified by police as 22-year-old Ilona Flint from San Diego.

“A third person, identified as Salvatore's brother Gianni Belvedere, was with the two at the mall on Monday night. Family members say they have not heard from him since, but they're very worried about him. Police had not identified anyone as a suspect as of Tuesday night and the motive was under investigation.”

Wednesday night California Mission Valley Mall shooting update:

According to an updated CBS report, the sisters of the two Belvedere brothers, Angela, Antoinette, and Laura, are saying that they have still not heard of Gianni and that they are hoping that the public can help. Police have not identified anyone as a suspect in the California Mission Valley Mall shooting.

"All we know right now is that he is missing and we need him to go home. Please, please if you know his whereabouts or if you have seen him or his car, we're asking that you please contact San Diego police. Our family has been through a lot and we need your prayers and we hope to bring Gian home. It's an unusual thing to happen and this is very unlike Gian, so we are here today to ask for everybody to look for him because we don't have a clue where he could be."

Gianni drives an olive-colored 2004 Toyota Camry with the Utah license plate B154VZ. The sisters are saying they are worried that their brother may also be in danger.

Thursday night California Mission Valley Mall shooting update:

As of Thursday night, Gianni is still missing and his brother Salvatore is in the hospital in critical condition. Salvatore did suffer suffer brain damage in the shooting. CBS reported during Thursday night's news broadcast that Salvatore was in the mall parking lot to pick up his brother's fiancee, which the family says was not unusual. Ilona Flint worked at the Mission Valley Mall. "It does not appear that any sort of robbery took place," Lt. Mike Hastings of the San Diego Police Departments homicide unit said. "We still do not know a motive as to why this occurred."

Gianni Belvedere is described as being 6 feet tall and weighing 165 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. Detectives are also looking for his dark green, four-door 2004 Toyota Camry XLE with Utah license plate B15-4VZ. Gianni was last seen at about 10 p.m. Monday in Tierrasanta.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit -- Adult Missing Persons Section at (619) 531-2293 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477. Anonymous email and text messages can also be sent in via, and a reward of up to $1,000 may be paid through the San Diego County Crime Stoppers for information provided on the whereabouts of Gianni or the crime. At this point, Gianni remains only a person that his family and police are looking for in order to solve the mystery of the California Mission Valley Mall shooting.
