Colorado School of Mines junior Trevor Wages’ forceful dunk ended their game against Metro State. But it was only the first half.
Wages took a pass and slam dunked the ball, shattering the back board in the process. The rim hung loose from the baskets frame. The RMAC matchup was forced to be postponed.
“I just never thought I’d actually do that,” Wages said on 9NEWS just a few hours after dismantling the rim from its hinges. “I was watching a video on SportsCenter a month ago [of Pittsburgh’s Jerome Lane backboarding smashing dunk], so I was just thinking to myself, ‘There is no way I’ll ever do that.’”
Yes, yes, Wages, you did do it. His family and friend were in the audience to witness it.
“I didn’t believe it until I landed,” said the Chatfield Senior High graduate, recalling the incident. “I was just stoked about the dunk and then all of a sudden I look back and it’s hanging down. I just started screaming.”
As bizarre, unusual and extraordinary as his dunk was it wasn’t his plan to stop the game. The byproduct, along with thousands of little pieces of glass littering the Metro State gymnasium floor, was that they couldn’t finish the game.

“I was thinking, ‘Are we going to be able to play the rest of the game,’” said Wages. “Those kinds of plays get you pumped. We had the momentum, you don’t want to stop playing. It was an awesome experience but I wish we could still be playing.”
The game will be resumed Sunday night at 7 p.m.
