The election may be more than a year away, but Michigan's declared Democratic candidates for federal and state offices will be campaigning this week and next in Washtenaw County.
On Labor Day, Democratic candidates for Governor, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House will be headlining Labor Day Laborpalooza at Gallup Park during the late afternoon and evening. They will be joined by most of the county's representatives to the Michigan House and Senate, all of whom will also be on the ballot next year.
This Saturday, one of these candidates, Pam Byrnes, who is running for U.S. Congress in the Seventh District, will begin a tour of all seven counties in the district. She will finish her campaign swing in Chelsea on Monday.
Both of the Democratic candidates who have thrown their hats in the ring for statewide office will be at Laborpalooza, along with nearly all those Democrats running for election or re-election to federal or state office in districts representing Washtenaw County. Former U.S. Representative Mark Schauer, who is running for Governor, and current U.S. Representative Gary Peters, who is running for U.S. Senate, are listed as featured guests on the event's Facebook page, along with former State Representative Pam Byrnes, a candidate for the U.S. House.
Joining Schauer, Peters, and Byrnes will be U.S. Representative John Dingell, State Senator Rebekah Warren, State Representatives Gretchen Driskell, Jeff Irwin, and David Rutledge, and Wayne State University Governor Debbie Dingell.
In addition to the candidates and elected officials, there will be food, live music, volleyball, and a dunk tank, carrying on the events heritage as the Ann Arbor Dems Labor Day Picnic. Laborpalooza will be at Gallup Park beginning at 3:00 P.M. and ending at 7:00 P.M. Admission is $15, $10 for students.
Byrnes Seventh District Tour
Only a few days after Laborpalooza, Byrnes will make a whirlwind tour of all seven counties in the Seventh District. On Saturday, September 7th, she will march in the Charlotte Frontier Days Parade in the late morning. That afternoon and evening, she will hold meet and greets at coffee shops in Coldwater and Jackson.
Byrnes will continue the hectic pace on Sunday with meet and greet stops in Monroe, Adrian, and Hillsdale during the afternoon and early evening. She will finish her tour on Monday with a fundraiser in Chelsea.
Republicans on Labor Day
Governor Rick Snyder of Ann Arbor will spend Labor Day leading the 56th Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk.
Neither former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, nor Tim Walberg, the incumbent U.S. Representative for the Seventh Congressional District of Michigan, have events listed for Labor Day on either their campaign websites or campaign Facebook pages.
