Animal Planet’s third annual “Monster Week” concludes Memorial Day weekend with mermaids. The network will air their blockbuster specials “Mermaids: The Body Found” and “Mermaids: The New Evidence” leading up to the season finale of “River Monsters” Monday night. The network’s mermaid shows are the most popular specials every year during “Monster Week.”

The docufiction mermaid special “Mermaids: The Body Found” debuted on Animal Planet in 2012 to the highest ratings in the network’s history. Because there was only a tiny disclaimer stating that the show was a mock documentary millions of viewers believed that the show was factual and inundated the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Navy, and even the Department of Homeland Security with phone calls and emails asking if mermaids were real, and if the U.S. Navy was covering up evidence that mermaids had been discovered.

NOAA Fisheries even issued a public statement saying that no evidence of aquatic humans has ever been discovered. Further, NOAA added a page to their official website talking about mermaid folklore and reiterating their public denial of the existence of mermaids.

The public sensation was repeated every time the network re-aired the special. Last year the sequel “Mermaids: The New Evidence” premiered and again captured the public’s imagination and went viral online, and resulted in another round of calls and emails to government agencies.

Monday night Animal Planet concludes “Monster Week” with the season six finale of “River Monsters” with a mermaid themed episode called “Body Snatcher.” Host Jeremy Wade travels to South America to investigate a river monster called the Water Mama, also known as Mama Wati, a water fairy from pan-African fairy lore. This mermaid is said to be able to appear as a beautiful mermaid that can be either benevolent or dangerous. In this case, the mermaid may be responsible for the disappearances of several people.
