Megan Fox credits sugar-free Paleo low carb diet for rapid weight loss

Megan Fox is earning attention for her rapid weight loss after her second son, which she credits to a Paleo low carb diet. Appearing at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premiere in Mexico City, Megan showed off her slim success in a mini dress, reported Us Weekly on July 30.

Although it's not easy promoting a film while raising a baby and child, Megan has managed to make time for regular workouts with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak. He also helped Jessica Simpson shed her post-baby weight prior to her wedding.

When it comes to her diet, Megan has followed a Paleo-style plan, saying, "I've had to eliminate bread from my diet, so I'm on that high-protein, very low-carbohydrate, very low-sugar diet," reported the International Business Times on July 31.

The diet eliminates all grains and dairy. Permitted foods on the Paleo diet include vegetables, fruit, animal protein and healthy fats. The low carb diet excludes alcohol and legumes as well.

Although Megan says that her current diet is "awful," she admits that she was fortunate in not having to stress about losing weight after her first pregnancy. "Let me tell you: the first time I didn't do anything. I was just lucky and I was younger," she told E News.

But not all Paleo diet followers consider it "awful." An increasing number of athletes are choosing the approach to power events ranging from ultra-marathons to the famous Ironman, reported Triathlete Europe on July 29.

A Paleo diet provides "better long-term recovery, due to greater micronutrient content [than a standard high-starch and sugar diet], allowing the athlete to train with a greater stress load," said Joe Friel, a U.S. Olympic triathlon coach and co-author with Dr. Loren Cordain of "The Paleo Diet for Athletes: The Ancient Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance."

Compared to high carb diets, Friel said that Paleo diets provide more antioxidants and vitamins, improved fat oxidation to help with endurance and more protein for muscle mass. And low carb diet gurus Dr. Stephen Phinney and Dr. Jeff Volek agree.

The duo have conducted extensive research on how restricting carbohydrates as required on Paleo diets and other types of low carb diets affect athletes. "The concept that humans ‘need a certain amount of dietary carbs for proper function of the body’ has no basis in science," said Dr. Phinney in an exclusive interview. "It is a myth perpetuated by the USDA and the dietetic establishment."

So while Megan Fox may miss her bread, Dr. Phinney says that her low carb diet is the ideal approach for weight loss. As for those who say that the Paleo diet and other low-carb diets are risky, he asks the rhetorical question: “What risks?” He cites benefits including improved good (aka HDL) cholesterol levels, reduction in inflammation and lower levels of saturated fats in the blood.
