Meet KBM driver Joey Coulter

Joey Coulter is the new face behind the wheel of the No. 18 Toyota Tundra for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the Camping World Truck Series. Here’s some background on the 22-year-old driver, who is studying Mechanical Engineering at UNC-Charlotte.

Coulter was born June 8th, 1990 in Miami Springs, Florida. He started racing go-karts in 1998, and in 1999 competed in two series – the World Karting Association Horstman Gold Cup national series and the Florida WKA Championship series. Coulter won more than 50 races and took two state championships during those two seasons. He continued in karting through 2005, when he won the Summer Nationals at the G & J Kartway in Camden, Ohio as well as both state championships in Florida running Briggs Junior light and heavy; he also won the Naples championship two straight years.

In 2005, Coulter also tried out the Florida FASTRUCK Series, earning four top five finishes in his first five starts. In 2006, he joined the FASTRUCK Pro Series and won four of the first eight races, going on to finish fourth in points. In 2007 Coulter moved up to stock cars in the USAR Pro Cup Series.

In 2009, Coulter competed in the ARCA Racing Series, finishing fourth in points on the strength of 13 top 10s and two poles; one year later he won his first ARCA race at Berlin Raceway. In 2011, Coulter moved up to the Truck Series as part of the Richard Childress Racing stable;he earned 13 top 10 finishes and finished seventh in points that year, winning the series’ Rookie of the Year award over his new KBM teammate Parker Kligerman and Nelson Piquet Jr.

Coulter finished third in Trucks in 2012, winning the first event of his career at Pocono in August; he had 15 top 10 finishes in the series’ 22 races. In 2013, he will once again team up with veteran crew chief Harold Holly, who has been with Coulter the past four seasons.
