The mayor of San Antonio, Texas will not respond to emails concerning the controversial situation with the city’s Animal Care Services (ACS). This reporter has learned today that many citizens that have written over the past months do not receive the courtesy of a response.
San Antonio voters, taxpayers, and nonprofits feel it is alarming that Mayor Castro will not respond to those that put him in office. It is especially alarming since the mayor claims to be an animal rights activist and has boasted of his accomplishments toward a no kill situation in the city.
However, voters feel that he has nothing to boast about. Citizens believe the city is concealing a great deal from its residents.
Much of the controversy is over the Brooks animal facility that has implemented severely restricted access. Those searching for a lost pet are not even permitted to browse there. Their pet can be killed before they have a reasonable chance to find it. Viewing is by appointment only, and only animals picked from photographs supplied may be viewed. Listing errors are often made, and animals are killed quickly. It is reported extremely difficult to save the pets in time.
Moreover, those that cannot speak English cannot use the system. The search system is in English only. A family pet taken to Brooks will likely be killed without them having a chance to save it.
With a predominately Latino and Hispanic population, it is shocking to most that such restrictions exist. Additionally, those that have problems reading or don’t have internet or computer access are also excluded. However, the city claims it has a viable system in place.
The local media fails to fully provide factual information to the public. The Mayor ignores the situation, and city representatives and main-stream media continue to provide incomplete and misleading data.
Many in San Antonio hope Mayor Julian Castro and city representatives will soon deal honestly with the people they have sworn to serve.
