Mayor of Newark, Cory Booker hosted an unusual event. The first toy gun exchange was held yesterday and proved successful. The city which has very high crime rate and gun violence is common, is reaching out to the youngsters.
A traditional gun exchange is when an individual can give up a gun for cash or reward. This toy gun exchange is exactly what it sounds like. Children were able to hand over toy guns and toy weapon for another more suitable toy.
Stop Shootin’ Music and Newark officials sponsored the toy gun exchange that Mayor Booker attended. While the exchange was occurring, a man nearby fired a gun. Ironically this demonstrated further how gun violence has become commonplace in Newark’s troubled streets. The nearby man was said to have shot himself and no one else was injured.
While no evidence has been found to link childhood play with toy guns with future violence, the toy gun exchange was commendable.
"They’re getting books in their hands, positive toys, “Mayor Cory Booker said. There is never anything wrong with that!
"There are healthy toys, learning toys," said Al-Tarik Onque, founder of Stop Shootin’ Music, referring to the basketballs, tea sets, books and action figures. "Don’t let guns be the first option."
What a great positive message to the community. Children offered toy guns will most likely feel comfortable with any gun. While the outcome of the exchange was successful, it is not likely to solve the crime problem.
Should more communities offer this family friendly event? A positive and hopeful message these children went home with healthy options to toy guns. No one should play with guns, especially children.
