May is a great month for herb gardens and gardeners

The focus is on growing herbs this month in Las Vegas.

Herbs are plants and plant parts that are used in many forms in and around the house.   Herbs add taste, fragrance and color to cooking and culinary arts.  Traditionally herbs have been used as internal or external medicines for generations and are continually being studied for new cures.  Each herb plant has been chosen from the earth’s bounty for one or several properties that have been found to be beneficial for humans.

Sensory gardens full of herb plants are often added to botanical gardens, zoos and other places visited by the public.  Everyone can enjoy a sensory garden because of the smells, tastes, textures and colors that herbs provide.

Desert landscapes use herb plants because of their hardiness and drought resistance.  Some of the most common ones seen in Las Vegas landscapes are:  Lavender, Rosemary, Sage and Salvia.  In moist protected places Mint, Parsley, Oregano, Marjoram and Basil will thrive.  Dill, garlic and chives add interest and protection in vegetable gardens.

This month public gardening activities abound for gardeners who want to learn more about growing herbs.  Even in an apartment a few pots of herbs can be grown to brighten up a room and to add the benefits of aroma therapy by a quick rub on the leaves when passing by.
