Mark Buehrle sets record, retires 45 straight in second consecutive perfect game attempt

Less than a week after Chicago White Sox P Mark Buehrle threw a Perfect Game, he nearly did it again.

He went 17 up, 17 down against the Minnesota Twins tonight before giving up a walk followed by a single to break up the no-hitter with two outs in the sixth inning.

As impossible as it would have been to follow up something as rare as a perfect game with another one or at least a no-hitter, it still sets a new MLB record at 45 straight batters retired. Passing teammate and former co-owner of the record Bobby Jenks in the process.

When the walk was finally given up on a close pitch the Metrodome crowd--good baseball fans--stood and cheered the accomplishment Buehrle had obtained over the last week, simply an incredible run.
