A unique take on increasing performance and reducing weight, three models of Mercedes-Benz vehicles can now be outfitted with aftermarket performance car parts made from marijuana. Making use of the hemp fibers found in the marijuana plant, the Hempflax company is making bold moves in the world of automotive performance. According to Hempflax, their parts are lighter weight and stronger than the OEM plastics and glass fibers. Stronger and lighter parts on a vehicle reduce the overall fuel consumption and environmental impact as opposed to current automotive technology. Will hemp fiber products find their way into the common auto parts store? It's very possible if marijuana is legalized and starts becoming a mass produced product.
During these times of marijuana debate, use of hemp to reduce the carbon footprint of motorists around the world is a very valuable aspect to the topic. The future of marijuana derived car parts is bright, as it costs less than carbon fiber and offers nearly the same strength and weight reduction. Increasing safety, reducing weight, improving performance, and yielding better gas mileage; the debate over using hemp products in vehicles is alive and well. This is considered a modern advancement, but it's not the first time marijuana and it's hemp fiber have been used in the automotive world.
Back in the early days of Ford, Henry Ford created a vehicle made of hemp resin and fiber which ran on ethanol produced from marijuana plants. Even back then we knew about the benefits of using hemp in our vehicles, so why did we wait? Only when the green movement took a strong hold, did modern consumers start to accept the fact we can use light weight hemp fiber products in our vehicles, and ethanol instead of gasoline in our fuel tanks. Automotive technology has come a long way and is going in the right direction. However, car manufacturers are still stumped on how to reduce weight while maintaining safety. Could hemp products be the solution? Comment below.
