Mardi Gras sizzle ends in a cold, wet fizzle

With celebrities in town and in the streets including Hugh Laurie, John Schneider, Norman Reedus, Ian Somerhalder, Quentin Tarantino, and James Roday things were sizzling all week. Captains' Parties, Krewe Parties, and full out, formal balls kept the celebration going with music, dancing, and delicacies to delight the palate.

Prior to today, predictions were that New Orleans parades would have record attendance on Mardi Gras Day. That was not to be with today, Mardi Gras Day, itself starting on a bad note. The temperature near freezing in Uptown New Orleans and a light, chilling rain persisted throughout the day. The bleachers in front of Gallier Hall, where the Kings and Queens toast the Mayor, were completely empty an hour before the Zulu parade rolled. Folks were clearly more afraid of the weather than they were of not getting a good seat.

By 4 p.m. when the last float had rolled past Gallier Hall's empty reviewing stand, the temperature gauge on this writers Chevrolet HHR, showed it was a balmy 34 degrees Fahrenheit and still raining.

Some of the celebrants took it in stride with raincoats, and warm clothes. For the remnant still in the stands the last several hours, it was a treasure trove of Mardi Gras goodies with some getting an armload from each float that passed.

Don't worry about how this turn of the weather might impact the good folks of New Orleans. This year the availability of parking was the worst yet and last few nights the downtown parking jumped as high as $50 for those who could find it. You can be pretty sure that many of those attendees stayed in town and went, instead, to one of the many restaurants, night clubs, and other warm, dry places and spent lots, and lots of money.
