A man slapped a crying baby on board an Atlanta-bound Delta flight according to a Feb. 16 report on Christian Post.
The flight departed from Minneapolis on Feb. 8 and as it neared its destination, the baby began crying. Joe Rickey Hundley of Idaho, also on the flight, was annoyed by the crying and screamed at the child’s mother using racial slurs and then slapped the baby in the face.
The child’s mother, Jessica Bennett, 33, described the brutal and sudden attack saying the slap was hard enough to leave a scratch under the child’s right eye.
According to the police report, Hundley shouted, "Shut that (n-word) baby up!" as he slapped the baby boy. Witnesses to the incident said the slap had the opposite of the attacker’s desired effect and caused the child to cry with more intensity.
A number of concerned passengers came to the aid of the mother and child. Hundley was later placed under arrest. At that time it was determined that Hundley was intoxicated. It was later learned that the 60 year old man has a 2007 charge on his record for public intoxication and carrying a concealed weapon.
Attorney Marcia Shein who is representing the alleged baby assaulter has asked that the case not be tried in the court of public opinion and that the case be given time to develop. On Friday she said, "We think that it is important to let the case develop, and we'll see how it all comes out."
