The child subsequently died after Patterson, 27, was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant on Oct. 11.
According to reports, police responded to a call from an apartment in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Oct. 9 and found the Minnesota Vikings running back's son unresponsive when they arrived on scene.
Hollywood Life reports the child’s mother is Ann “Ashley” Doohen, who was not at home when the incident took place. Instead, Patterson, who she was reportedly dating, was taking care of the boy.
The toddler was transported to a local hospital where doctors found injuries consistent with abuse, reports KELO.
The Daily News reports that according to the Argus Leader, in the summer of 2012, Patterson was indicted on various counts of simple assault involving an ex-girlfriend and her toddler son. He was then sentenced to a year behind bars for violating a restraining order, but ended up with a suspended sentence because he agreed to attend domestic violence counseling.
The Leader reports that the ex-girlfriend requested the no contact order alleging Patterson spanked her 3-years-old son so hard, he left welts on his buttocks. When she confronted him about the injuries, he allegedly sent the children into another room, closed the shades, grabbed her by the throat and threatened to hit her with his fist.
Patterson’s bond is set at $750,000 cash and a revocation hearing is slated for Oct. 30, according to the Daily News.
