Loyal dog stands guard over companion, then taken to animal control

Via Facebook

Last week, a pit bull dubbed "Herman," was spotted on an Atlanta, Ga., street standing guard over his canine companion who had been grievously injured by a moving vehicle.

The wounded dog did not survive her injuries, and the loyal canine friend who tried to protect her was picked up and taken to a busy animal control facility. Unfortunately for Herman, he is one of many pit bulls who are housed behind the bars of the city's animal control agencies, and if not for the poignant photo captured of him, he might be lost forever.

On July 18, the photo of Herman and his downed companion was posted to the official Facebook fan page for Kylie Szymanski - the actress who portrays Penny Blake on AMC's, The Walking Dead.

Szymanski wrote:

Is there ANYONE in the Atlanta area who can use a new best friend? This poor guy lost his best friend today and stood over her until they took him away. He is alone and scared and sad in a local shelter. Please let me know if you can help or know someone who can.

The post generated a huge response, with over 1,000 shares, but as of Monday Herman was still impounded and in need of help. According to the Fulton County Animal Services facility, where Herman is being held, private adopters or rescue agencies are able to pull him from the shelter.
